Radial Tunnel Syndrome – Symptoms and Treatment

Radial Tunnel Syndrome - Condition Overview
Arm pain is a common complaint that is seen in the chiropractic field.  Radial Tunnel Syndrome (RTS) is one of these arm pain conditions resulting near the forearm and elbow that our Overland Park and Lenexa chiropractors specialize in diagnosis and conservative chiropractic treatment.  Radial Tunnel Syndrome presents typically with overuse of the forearm musculature or elbow joints.  Radial Tunnel Syndrome is similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, differing in location and presenting slightly different symptoms.  Where Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is commonly seen near the wrist with nerve symptoms including numbness, weakness, and tingling that extend into the hands and fingers, Radial Tunnel Syndrome presents with pain near the top of the forearm and elbow with symptoms that extend down the forearm into the thumb and first finger typically.  Grip strength can be affected but is typically due to the level of pain with the affected muscles inhibiting muscle contraction.
What Are Common Symptoms Of Radial Tunnel Syndrome (RTS)?
  • Localized pain near the top of the forearm near the elbow.
  • Pain can present differently but is typically achy with some patients experiencing stabbing, sharp, or throbbing pain.
  • Weakness in grip, typically due to pain associated with the grip muscles.
  • "Thumb Drop" or difficulty with extension or movement of the thumb.
  • Typically do not experience tingling, numbness
  • Difficulty with certain hand and wrist movements due to muscle and RTS pain.
  • Swelling and redness may or may not be present.
